Mayor announces hiring of 28 additional police officers
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (September 28, 2016) – Mayor Greg Fischer announced today that he will hire 28 additional police officers this fiscal year, bringing the total number of recruits to 150, the largest class ever for the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD). This brings the FY18 cadet classes to maximum capacity.
The Mayor will recommend full funding of about $2.8 million for the additional officers as part of his FY18 budget. The portion related to FY17 costs will be funded through a year-end budget adjustment.
“Public safety remains our highest priority as we help address the spike in violent crime,” the Mayor said.
The new police officers will be added to recruit classes between now and the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2017).
Chief Steve Conrad informed Metro Council of the Mayor’s decision today during his testimony before Metro Council.
“These new officers will put more people on the streets, where we need the most help,” Conrad said.
In the past two weeks, the Mayor, Chief and other Louisville Metro Government officials and partners have announced several public safety initiatives and updates, including LMPD personnel changes; plans for a new gunshot detection system; and expansion of the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods’ REimage program.
