What Really Happened to Missing Malaysia Airlines Plane MH370?

The fate of missing Malaysia Airlines Plane MH370 is one that still remains an unsolved mystery. The completely unexpected and mysterious nature of its disappearance captivated audiences for months as investigators, agencies and even governments tried to determine where the plane went and what caused it to disappear. There are many unique theories out there that seek to explain what really happened to Plane MH370 in 2014. We’ll review some of the theories – both reasonable and outlandish alike – of what went wrong.

Pilot Hijacking

One of the first and most popular theories in the initial days after MH370 crashed was that the pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, crashed the plane due to a variety of personal and financial problems. The theory goes that he locked the co-pilot out of the cockpit, de-pressurized the cabin and placed the aircraft on autopilot until it ran out of fuel. An independent investigation of MH370 by a New Zealand-based investigator and commercial pilot agreed with this conclusion, but it has never been conclusively proven.

Russian Theft

Another theory bouncing around on websites and among some analysts is that the Russian government stole MH370, faked its pinging indicators that were recorded for hours after its disappearance, and landed the jet in Kazakhstan. The main proponent of this theory is a science writer by the name of Jeff Wise, who helped lead the charge for coverage of the incident on CNN. Despite the insistence, there is virtually no definitive evidence that suggests this theory occurred.

Collaborative Terrorism

One theory that has been floated suggested that the plane was shot down by the Chinese after being used in an attempt to bomb a nearby Chinese grouping of navy ships. One person claimed to have seen the aircraft shortly after departing with black smoke emerging from its rear. The person who claimed to have seen this then postulated that the plane had been hijacked and was being used as a weapon to hit the nearby Chinese vessels. This theory – and the person whose account of seeing the black smoke emerging from the plane – lost credibility in mainstream outlets pretty quickly.

US Takedown

One other theory out there is that the United States – after learning of a terrorist hijacking of the plane – shot it down in order to prevent an attack on a base in the Indian Ocean. The Diego Garcia base, situated on an atoll, is within range of the MH370’s capacity. One individual in particular who a former French airline director reported that his investigation into this possible theory resulted in British intelligence agencies warning him that he “was taking risks” by doing so.

Simple Accident and Crash

And finally, one of the more mainstream theories behind MH370’s disappearance is that it simply crashed due to an accident. There is considerable merit to this possibility, considering the track record of the airline that managed MH370. Multiple families have consulted with an aviation accident attorney like Slack & Davis in attempts to seek damages from the airline for neglect of maintenance and other wrongdoings.

With literally dozens of potential theories about what happened to MH370, nobody has time to read them all. We may never really know what happened to MH370, but we do know that it could have been anything from sabotage or terrorism to theft or potential accident. One thing is for sure: this story will continue to pique the curiosities of many, as planes simply don’t just go missing every day.
