Sailing for a Cure Foundation holds regatta on the Ohio this weekend!

Beauty sails the Ohio for a Cause this weekend!

Many of you know I have been around boats most of my life, getting out on the Ohio is always great fun and I can handle a pretty big ship when I have to. There is one battle(ship) I haven’t faced, but some folks in our community have, and thats Leukemia & Lymphoma. I have had a few friends afflicted, and recovered, so you just never know who or how you may be touched by this disease. As we enjoy this fabulous Thursday Fall-like  weather, and gear up for a great weekend, lets “raise a sail” and head down to the Ohio for some sailing fun and frolic, all for a good cause! http://www.sailingforacure.org/

Fleur de Lis Regatta

Sailing for a Cure Foundation  is  Home of the Fleur de Lis Regatta!

When sailors participate in the Fleur de Lis Regatta, presented by Sailing for a Cure Foundation, they raise valuable funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to invest in research to find cures for blood cancers — leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma — and to help improve the lives of patients and families. For general donations it’s as simple as clicking the button below. You can become even more involved by going to the Sponsor a Team page and making a donation in the name of a specific boat, skipper or first mate. Why not consider making this your year to join us on September 16, 17 and 18 at the Harbor Lawn marina next to the Great Lawn at Louisville Waterfront Park and help cure cancer by supporting your family or friend in their participation? We would love to have you on our team! Event History

The Leukemia Cup Regatta

In 1993, with the help of noted sailing expert and ESPN commentator Gary Jobson, the Maryland Chapter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society hosted the first Leukemia Cup Regatta in Annapolis. Enthusiam for the event spread across the country and in 1999 thirty-eight chapters participated in the National Leukemia Cup Regatta program. It’s amazing how a weekend of sailing can go such a long way to help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society reach its goal of finding a cure for leukemia and all of the blood related cancers as well as improve the quality of life for patients and their families. By participating in the Fleur De Lis Regatta, you can raise much needed funds to support additional research and treatment of families in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

The Cause The City of Louisville and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society invite you to join the many sailors who have teamed up to make the future brighter for the thousands of families facing the everyday challenges of leukemia, lympnoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma. Leukemia is our nations number one disease killer of children, and unfortunately strikes ten times as many adults. Each boat will be participating and fundraising in honor of a local Patient Hero living with one of the above mentioned blood-related cancers. If you know someone with one of these diseases or wish to sail in memory of someone, please tell the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society regatta organizers prior to race day.

They will be sailing all weekend!  All to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Louisville…First Mates are kids with leukemia or lymphoma and Captains are all the sailors who take on the cause…some of them survivors as well! Please join us or log onto the website and make a donation to the cure!’Fleur de Lis Regatta Sailing Races to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Louisville September 16, 17, 18, 2011 Waterfront Park Friday (tomorrow) morning at 9, the boats will be anchored at: The Club Limestone Bay Club, Inc. 5801 River Road Prospect, KY 40059 (502) 228-7933 There will be Captains and First Mates (kids with leukemia) on hand to talk about event! Any pre-event coverage (and concurrent coverage) will be deeply appreciated!

Regatta Schedule The primary event for this fundraiser is the Fleur de Lis Regatta, kicking off on Friday night followed by two days of sailboat racing on the Ohio River near downtown Louisville, Kentucky. This location has been the mainstay for years and provides excellent viewing from under the tent on the Harbor Lawn, along with exciting challenges for racing because of the proximity of bridges and the downtown skyline. This is the only sailing event that is held at this location each year. Event Highlights
