Bad Karma is Pervasive Around Here

Tough night at Slugger

Is there some bad karma going around? I’m really sorry about your portfolio, and there’s plenty of doom and gloom in the financial press. But then, I found this headline on MSNBC: “Wall Street Set to Rebound after Biggest Drop in Years.”  So keep your chin up, despite the bad news.

Sure, I’ve got this hamstring pull that’s keep me off the racquetball court, but I’m optimistic that in a few more weeks, I can go out and test it again.

It was not a good night for the Louisville Bats, who dropped an 11-3 decision to Columbus in a game that was never in doubt. There was an announced crowd of 6,985, but it seemed there were a lot more empty seats than that. The Bats have been devastated this year, not by International League opponents, but by their parent Cincinnati Reds, who seem willing to call up anyone who puts a couple of hits together. The Bats are 2-5 in August, but they’re home again tonight at Slugger Field.

No More Bad First Days: Yesterday the new JCPS superintendent, Donna Hargens, released her 90-day plan outlining priorities for the school  year, and it all looks good on paper.  There’s a new plan to keep kids on the right buses, and as long as no first-grader shows up on the wrong bus or an hour late, there will no more calls for David Williams to take over JCPS. Hargens can’t have a worse first-day than a year ago, when bus snafus ultimately cost Sheldon Berman his job.

A Little Bad P.R.JCPS hired Guthrie-Mayes (for $20K) to help with handling the media for the opening of school. The firm advised board members to shut up. At least, to pass off media requests to Board Chair Steve Imhoff. But that didn’t sit well with the Board, and member Linda Duncan immediately appeared on Joe Elliott’s radio show, and told the C-J that she was “uncomfortable with being muzzled.”

Bad News for Larry:  The attorney for MSD, Larry Zielke, who’s gotten $5.9 million in fees in six years, has had his contract shortened, and his future as a client is in jeopardy, pending the outcome of an MSD audit.

Things to do in an Airport: Four U of L football players missed the Big East media day in Rhode Island when their flight was delayed, repeatedly. So Greg Scruggs (team leader in personality) made a video.

Media Voting: I’ve been spending a lot of my time voting for LouisvilleKY.com as “Best Local Website” in LEO’s Reader’s Choice Awards. Funniest category, by far: Best Laid-Off Gannett Employee.

Vote for Media Types: The Voice-Tribune’s voting is underway for its Best-Dressed List (They’ve got a big event planned Aug. 27).  Among those in the running are WLKY’s Vicki Dortch, Mix102.3 Radio’s Lynda Lambert and WHAS-TV’s Claudia Coffey. Matt Hobbs, the WHAS-TV sports director, is also on the list.
