You see “SHARE THE ROAD” license plates all the time. Maybe you own one of the plates. Or perhaps you think roads are just for cars and trucks – the bigger the better.
If you’re in that last category, we need to talk about getting you some education. Which brings me right back to those nifty “SHARE THE ROAD” plates.
The woman who came up with the idea for “SHARE THE ROAD” license plates was Paula Nye. She was Kentucky’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator from 2000 to 2005. When you buy one of those colorful plates, some of the money goes into a fund. It’s the Paula Nye Memorial Bicyclist and Pedestrian Education fund.
The money goes to support bicycling and pedestrian related non-profit education. The Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission recently awarded grants to four groups:
The recipients from Louisville are:
- Kentucky Youth Advocates – $15,000-to increase bicycle and pedestrian safety through Complete Streets and Safe Routes to School.
- Louisville Metro Government – $17,500-to create a community wide culture that supports the vital Bicycle and Pedestrian programs and projects which fall under the scope of education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation and projects and programs.
- Lincoln Heritage Trail, Boy Scouts of America – $10,000-to develop a mountain bike program for venture scouts age 16-18 that would promote health and safety initiatives.
- University of Louisville – $10,000-for Training the Trainers program of bicycle education and provision of bike maps.

PS: Remember, every lane is a bike lane. Share the road.
