File that under the most bizarre nicknames for a professional sports team. But the Kentucky StickHorses will be competing in professional lacrosse starting in January at Freedom Hall.

Here’s the release from a press conference held today:

LOUISVILLE, KY (September 27,2011)-The North American Lacrosse League announced today that their new team to play in Freedom Hall Arena starting in January is the Kentucky StickHorses.

The StickHorses are the fourth team to be announced for the NALL’s 2012 season, and will compete against teams from Charlotte, Jacksonville, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Along with their name, the StickHorses owner and team logo was announced.

“Louisville is one of the most progressive lacrosse areas in the Southwest,” said Tony Chase, owner of the team. “Growing up near Louisville, it’s been my dream to play at Freedom Hall.”

The team will play 7 home games from January to April at Freedom Hall Arena. The league will consist of the top United States lacrosse players. Players from schools such as Notre Dame, John Hopkins, and Syracuse will be wearing the team uniforms.

The Crowne Plaza Louisville Hotel will partner with the Kentucky StickHorses to accommodate the league’s visiting teams.
