CM Chicken has come to Clarksville

Generally your correspondent finds little of interest in the locales comprising Chainland and Franchiseria, but this CM Chicken (“your Seoul food destination,” aargh) story has an interesting cultural context for a lifelong Southern Indiana resident like me.

CM Chicken wasn’t looking to expand into Southern Indiana initially, (co-owner Viet) Tran said.

“I came to Louisville about 30 years ago from Vietnam, and there was nothing here (in the area) except Green Tree Mall,” Tran said. “But within the past five or 10 years, it’s just boomed.”

The boom is objectively quantifiable by added buildings and worsened traffic, but it’s also represented by a greater absorption rate for culinary diversity. We’ve had Chinese and Japanese restaurants for a long time; Mai’s Thai (in Jeffersonville) alone brought the cuisine of Thailand to the area two decades ago.

Now there inklings of Korean and Vietnamese in a place where, until recently, kimchi was treated like an invasive species.

Needless to say, these are welcomed additions to SoIN options, even if/when comprised by chains and franchises. In my view, lifting overall comprehension is the ultimate objective, and perhaps indies and moms & pops will follow.

The quote above comes from Olivia Estright’s article at Louisville Business First: CM Chicken opens first Southern Indiana location in Clarksville.

A Korean-style fried chicken chain has opened its first Southern Indiana location. Virginia-based CM Chicken opened in the former Peach Cobbler Factory location at 1401 Veterans Parkway in Clarksville, Indiana on Friday.
