One of my favorite ideas ever is Corporate (or Buzzword) Bingo. It’s the game you play while in meetings, or listening to the head honcho talk, where you count the number of times you hear corporate-speak. Words and phrases like teamwork, synergy, deal-breaker, game-changer, same page, culture, vision, mission, fast-track, blah, blah, blah.
Don’t get me wrong, none of those things are bad by themsleves, but we all know that when they are strung together by a talking head, you need something to help you pass the time. Well, I found a place where at least some of these phrases matter. Wedding Planning.
I have specifically gained a new love for synergy and being on the same page. You might think that Brigid and I are just frolicking along through this bed of roses that is planning our wedding. For the most part you’re right, but then somehow we end up not on the same page. Bingo! And the bed gets a little thorny.
We’re working on a “Things We”ve Learned so Far” list, but I want to give you my top two as a teaser:
1. Invest your time in each other. If you spend more time talking to each other and less time analyzing your to-do list on theknot, it’s much more likely that you stay on the same page.
2. Two heads are better than one. Each of you will care about different things in different ways. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t both participate in everything. Take advantage of the synergy you get when all your good ideas come together.
Bingo! Bingo!
I know, I know…corporate babble. But it’s true. The goal is to create a wonderful wedding experience for yourselves and not go crazy before it happens. If you (we) can remember that this partnership you are creating is pretty awesome (why else would you commit to it for life), you (we) can stay sane and turn the whole process into an amazing adventure.
I’ll keep you posted.
