LOUISVILLE, KY – Cyclouvia – the popular event showcasing alternative transportation – is returning to a two-mile stretch of Frankfort Avenue on Sunday, April 19th, Mayor Greg Fischer announced.
Frankfort Avenue from Pope Street to Stilz Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from 2-6 p.m. During the event, the two middle lanes of Frankfort Avenue will be open to bicycle use, and the two outer curb lanes will be used only for pedestrians and other non-bicycle usage.
“Our Cyclouvia events create an opportunity for citizens of all ages to experience Louisville in a new way by biking, walking, skateboarding or dancing in a car-free environment while promoting a healthy lifestyle and alternative transportation methods,” said Fischer. “Tens of thousands have participated in past events and attendance continues to grow.”
Louisville’s Cyclouvia is part of Kentucky’s 2nd Sunday Open Streets program, the only statewide program of its kind in the country. It is designed to encourage more communities to close streets to cars and open them to people. The return to Frankfort Avenue marks the fifth Cyclouvia event, with previous events being held on Bardstown Road and West Broadway.
Commercial establishments with frontage along the Frankfort Avenue corridor are encouraged to open their businesses during event hours and engage participants to create an atmosphere that is uniquely Louisville.
During the event, a police-assisted vehicular crossing from Pope Street to Stilz Avenue, crossing at Ewing Avenue will be in place.
