Did CBS TV hire Rick Pitino?

So what did you think? Not bad! Watch any of CBS TV’s coverage of March Madness this weekend and you know what I’m about to write. Rick Pitino is not only a good coach he’s a really good analyst.  The Louisville head coach joined CBS Sports’ and Turner Sports’ coverage of the 2011 NCAA tournament.

Officially he’s serving as a guest analyst Saturday and Sunday according to USA Today . But anyone who watched knows he really held his own alongside superstars Charles Barkley, Greg Anthony, Kenny Smith, Greg Gumbel and Ernie Johnson.

The talk has begun… are Rick’s days as a coach numbered? His delivery was smooth, he was authoritative and compelling all the elements a network executive looks for in on air talent. If I’m a CBS (or any other network executive) responsible for hiring, I’m on the phone right now asking Rick’s agent (if he doesn’t have one I’ll volunteer) for salary demands!

Remember Rick’s comments after his loss to Morehead State he said it was “as tough a loss as I’ve had in coaching,” before adding, “And I’ve been coaching a long time, after tonight maybe too long.”

Was that a omen of things to come? Was Rick thinking he’ll be pushed or will he jump? Louisville still loves him but the bright lights of network TV may be calling.
