End of Eras for Dutch’s, Nunn

A nice run for Dutch's ends after 80 years and a zillion kegs

It should be a bigger deal when a local business that’s been around for 80 years — 80 YEARS — shuts down, especially when so many of us remember stumbling around inside Dutch’s Tavern in St. Matthews listening to rock and roll. But the truth is the landmark, opened during the Great Depression, is gone. Maybe there’s such a thing as too many bars in a small area — there’s competition from Gerstle’s, Molly Malone’s, BBC, Brendan’s and now Drake’s.

Nunn Done It:  Steve Nunn did kill his ex-girlfriend back in September 2009. He pled guilty today and the 58-year-old will spend the rest of his life in jail.

Chocolate Overload: I’ll get in line to make fun of Richie Farmer, but the Democratic Party may have taken it a step too far when it put out a press release detailing six-year-0ld charges for candy. If Farmer’s more blatant ways of treating himself to goodies courtesy of taxpayers aren’t enough to convince voters he doesn’t deserve the public trust, I doubt plunking down a few bucks on Reese’s Cups will sway any voters.

Burke’s One Interview: WLKY got the exclusive jailhouse interview from, Brent Burke, who told Eric King that he’s innocent of killing his  ex-wife and her mother-in-law in Hardin County. After four trials, prosecutors seem stumped as to what to do next. They should release him.

Coaching Pays: John Calipari’s new contact at UK pays about $5 million a year, or around $150,000 a game. And he’s worth it.

On the Other Hand: The interim superintendent at JCPS, Freda Merriweather, will get $680 a day to show up for work in July. That’s about $14,000 for a month of working. The new super, Donna Hargens, starts July 1.

No to No Kill: Greg Fischer made a good decision in rejecting the lone bid for operating Metro Animal Services, from a group called No Kill Louisville. So now the city’s reopening its search for a new director for the department.

Bridge Talk: Want to talk some more about the Ohio River Bridges project? Me neither. If you do, show up at the Holiday Inn Hurstbourne this afternoon at 4. At a similar meeting last night in Indiana, 300 people showed up, most expressing opposition to tolls.
