For those unfamiliar with Half-Peach Bakery & Cafe (170 Sears Avenue in St. Matthews), this introduction comes from the establishment’s web site.

Influenced by her Chinese roots, her extensive travel and her time as a Southerner, Sue Zhao offers a unique menu of baked goods and savory meals that combine the bold flavors of international fare with the down home style of comfort food.

Among the most popular items is the Half-Peach take on a fried ‘chicken’ sandwich, made with a breaded soy patty with cashew cheese, and a house-made gluten-free burger made from black eyed peas, beets and chickpeas.

Every item at Half-Peach is free of preservatives and animal products, and made from scratch in the on-site kitchen. Many offerings are also gluten, oil, sugar and salt-free.

Recently Half-Peach’s Vegan Chikn and Dumplings Soup garnered national recognition from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Following are excerpts from PETA’s information release.

As temperatures dip and people seek warm comfort foods to get them through the winter, PETA is announcing its picks for the nation’s 10 best plant-powered soups and stews with its Souper Vegan Awards—and Louisville’s own Half-Peach Bakery & Cafe has made the list. The vegan eatery’s mouthwatering Chikn & Dumplings Soup features savory meat-free morsels and hearty dumplings in a rich, creamy broth.

“Half-Peach Bakery & Café has created a delicious soup that’s kind to animals and provides comfort and warmth in each spoonful,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “Every winner on PETA’s awards list shows how easy it is to make a soup-erb stew or soup that leaves animals in peace and keeps everyone feeling nicely nourished.”

In addition to sparing nearly 200 animals every year, each person who goes vegan also bolsters their own health, as vegans are less likely to suffer from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
