What caused WHAS 11 reporter Mike Colombo to accidentally appear on camera for some 30 seconds during ABC prime time?
It’s a scary moment for the WHAS 11 staff. During a commercial break during ABC’s 20/20, up popped a live feed of Mike rehearsing lines for his live shot at 11. Mike had no idea he was live and his photographer even responded to a white balance request (registering the camera color balance to white) while on the air.
The problem was most likely caused by an engineering gaffe or control room equipment failure. Though it looked odd, Mike didn’t embarrass himself and he nailed his live shot at 11! It might be time for General Manager Mark Pimentel (a former news director of mine back at WXIA in Atlanta) to loosen up his budget and buy the station a new switcher or do a little extra maintenance on that equipment. I just hope it wasn’t human error!
