By this time, Louisville’s beer aficionados should be aware that while Against the Grain Brewery is leaving its brewpub/taproom home at Louisville Slugger Field, the brewery’s production arm in Portland remains, producing the beers we all know as well as a rapidly expanding array of beverages not to be confused in the least with beer.
The “blue” note: Against the Grain will leave Slugger Field at year’s end
Accordingly, the week before Thanksgiving we invited AtG’s two owners, Sam Cruz and Jerry Gnagy, to the The Pubcast’s plush New Albanian studio to discuss The Current State of The Grain. Note that AtG’s founding “brewer-owned” quartet has since been pared to two, amicably for all involved.

Your takeaway: Against the Grain is evolving, not leaving.
However, 14 years at the ballpark (401 E. Main St.) is a long time by any definition, and there will be a suitable opportunity for all of us to say goodbye in style on Wednesday, December 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Today’s cover photo was taken in 2011, as AtG prepared to begin the run it now concludes. Here’s the event information release.

Against the Grain Hosts “Last Call” Closing Event Benefiting Apron Inc. — Featuring the Return of Bo & Luke
Against the Grain Brewery will host a special “Last Call” farewell event to commemorate its final month as a downtown restaurant, while celebrating its ongoing beverage legacy and raising funds for local industry nonprofit APRON Inc.
While this event marks a farewell to the restaurant side—for now—AtG is very much continuing forward in beer and beverage production. In fact, the Last Call celebration will mark the long-awaited return of Bo & Luke (for the first time in two years), including the rare opportunity to taste select vintage bottles from AtG’s cellar.
Additionally, the evening will spotlight AtG’s global brewing collaborations:
- Japas Cervejaria (São Paulo, Brazil) — Brazil’s first women-owned brewery
- Oslo Brewing (Norway)
- Schnitt Brewing Company (Tel Aviv) — whose partnership helped make AtG one of Kentucky’s only kosher breweries
