Last week John Carlos White was summoned for last call, and it is far too early to predict our magazine’s future, and by extension, this web site’s. For now, my aim is business as usual, insofar as I’m able to undertake it. My stubbornness is as legendary as John’s sales prowess.
For a good while now, this weekly column about beer, which also has appeared in most print editions of Food & Dining Magazine since 2004, has been the only regular media space in metro Louisville devoted to beer — as written by an actual human being, as opposed to “Greenside” AI (if you know, you know). The next Tik Tok video I make will be my first.
Thanks again to John for offering me this opportunity, and sustaining it. We are slowly adjusting to his absence, which is acute, as well as a constant reminder of the force of his personality.
Today there are three orders of business: Shippingport Brewing Company’s closing; NABC’s mini-Gravity Head tribute, beginning Fri., Feb. 27; and the recent “modest proposal” made by Wisconsin’s Minacqua Brewing Company.
Let’s get on with it.
Shippingport Brewing’s advent five years ago was a hopeful sign that Louisville craft beer’s center of gravity might at last be shifting west and south. This hope has proven a bit premature, although ample time remains on whatever socio-economic clock still ticks.
Still, it’s a discussion we continue not having, and this precise moment is no exception. The amazing folks at Shippingport touched all the bases in their Facebook post, and here’s the text.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Shippingport Brewing’s last day of business at 1221 W Main St will be Saturday, February 28th. We opened our doors in our cozy taproom off the beaten path in June of 2021 with a passion and dedication to serving amazing beer & food in an environment dedicated to community.
Our collaborative spirit brewed up some amazing times, from special beers with friends nationwide to thrilling bike rides and races. We brought you spectacular drag and burlesque, lively pop-ups, countless weddings and birthdays, and even rocked out with bands from around the globe.
