Kentucky media: We could all use a little change

Not just the leaves are a’ changing in Kentucky, but some media is changing, and some guys are still looking for you to spare a little change!

The Eagle Has Landed

If you are Louisville radio listener, you may have noticed bit of a change at the end of the FM dial. Seems the 1077 SFR Classic Rock station, owned by Cox Media, has changed to 1077 The Eagle Louisville’s Classic Hits.

I really didn’t notice the format change so much in the music selection until I heard the 2 + minute imaging commercial that talks about Louisville, and about every Louisville cliché we have , including Derby and how to even pronounce Louisville.

Check out the video on their Facebook page:

There are no Jocks “live” on the station right now and rumor has it they are in training for the new format- I would think that after saying (Insert BIG VOICE: 1077 S-F-R) all these years, it would take a bit of reprogramming. The guys and gals should be back shortly.

Here is a FB post from October 28:

If you have turned on 107.7 today, you’ve heard something a little different! As of 8:30 a.m., 107.7 SFR is now 107.7 The Eagle.

Here is the nutshell:

1) The station is now “Louisville’s Classic Hits.” The Eagle will play mostly rock from the 1970s: Seger, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller Band, Led Zep. There will still be 60’s and 80’s songs, but the bulk will be from the 1970s.

2) All the staff is staying. Future Bob and Ric will be back on the air starting November 7th.

Thanks for hangin’ with us! We’ll continue doing the best we can to play the songs you LOVE!

Speaking of Radio- and I don’t have any local intel ( Anyone? Anyone?), but Clear Channel seems to have had a national, mass lay-off of on-air talent. According to their press release:

Clear Channel Radio Announces New National Programming Platforms Team
New Division To Deliver Unparalleled On-Air, Digital and Live Event Content Across Clear Channel’s Multiple Platforms

New York, NY – October 27, 2011 – Clear Channel Radio, the leading media company in America with a greater reach in the U.S. than any radio or television company, today announced the following appointments to its new National Programming Platforms division. . . .

So what that tells us is local radio is waning vs. all of the online and streaming, customizable music available. We can, just like social media platforms, news aggregator websites and everything on demand, become the masters of our own music universe. Through Spotify, you can find reams of great music, bookmark it and stream all day. Pandora takes your selection of one song and spoon feeds you a stream of the same genre.

Just these two music entities alone can make local radio a non-entity, unless you need traffic and weather at the morning and evening rush hour.

We will have to look into the Clear Channel news, here’s a little piece from Fox News.

Update on the Kentucky For Kentucky Superbowl ad:

Remember the marketing guys looking to show off theoir roots and our home state by crowdfunding a Super Bowl ad? Well, with 5 days to go, they are only about $100,000 out of the $3.5 million needed for the ad.

They have gotten some serious National press, and even if they don’t make the goal, we love ‘em anyway for being suck Kicka** Kentuckians!

Here is the video about the project, and after the jump, find the pledge levels- that are pretty funny when you log on and read the entire descriptions.

Good Luck Guys!
