Louisville, KY., – Metro Council Members Angela Leet (District 7), Kevin Kramer (District 11), Kelly Downard (District 16), Glen Stuckel (District 17), Marilyn Parker (District 18), and Julie Denton (District 19) along with The Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition will offer free Naloxone (also referred to by its brand name as Narcan®) kits and a training session on how to administer it to reverse the effects of overdose from heroin and other opioid drugs and prevent death.
The free training is open to the general public. First responders, family and friends of those who use heroin or other opioid drugs are encouraged to attend. The training will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at University of Louisville’s Shelby Campus located at 440 N. Whittington Pkwy.
Naloxone is a medication called an “opioid antagonist” used to counter the effects of opioid overdose. Naloxone is used in heroin and other opioid drug overdoses to counteract life-threatening depression of the central nervous system and respiratory system, allowing an overdose victim to breathe normally.
Representatives of The Healing Place and Volunteers of America will also be on hand to explain what services they provide for recovery of those suffering from addiction.
The training will feature the following:
· Learning the signs and symptoms of heroin and opioid overdose
· Learn how to use Naloxone (Narcan) to respond to an overdose
· Each individual can register to receive a Naloxone kit
