Louisville, Ky., – Legislation that would make it easier to bring in Google Fiber unanimously passed the Louisville Metro Council Thursday night.
Local news outlets report that the two ordinances would combine all of Jefferson County’s cities into one entity and that entity could negotiate contracts and adjust installation permissions for workers. Previously, it would take 60 months to get the necessary paperwork for workers to move exisitng utility lines. With the new ordinance, that time can be cut almost in half to 24-36 months.
According to a news story on WDRB, Mayor Greg Fischer applauds the council’s move.
“Tonight’s vote puts Louisville one step closer toward becoming a Google Fiber city — and lays the groundwork for expansion of gigabit services by other providers,” Mayor Greg Fischer said in a statement Thursday night. “This was also an affirmative vote to grow the economy and jobs.”
