Louisville Orchestra brings Rachmaninoff Second and Jorge Mester back to Kentucky Center

 

Louisville, KY – Music Director Emeritus, Jorge Mester, returns to perform Rachmaninoff’s Second with the Louisville Orchestra on Friday, January 8 at 11 a.m. and Saturday, January 9 at 8 p.m. at the Kentucky Center. The grandeur and magnificence of Romanticism comes to life in this performance with guest pianist William Wolfram performing Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The Saturday evening concert, which also includes Boloslav Martinůs Symphony No. 6 and Dances of Galánta by Zoltan Kodály, provides a dignified and majestic orchestral experience. The Treyton Oak Towers Coffee Classics has changed for the 2015-16 season. Coffee concerts will begin at 11 a.m. and will be abbreviated to 70 minutes without intermission. This performance program includes William Wolfram performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and the Louisville Orchestra performing the Symphony No. 6 by Martinu under the direction of Maestro Mester.

American pianist William Wolfram is known as an incredibly versatile and skilled recitalist, accompanist, and chamber musician. Wolfram has received numerous awards for his artistry, including silver medals from both the William Kapell and the Naumburg International Piano Competitions and a bronze medal from the highly-esteemed Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Wolfram, a graduate of The Juilliard School, currently resides in New York City with his wife and two daughters.

Jorge Mester has long been considered an ardent champion of contemporary music, Mester has given more than 70 world-premiere performances. During his 12-year tenure as music director of the Louisville Orchestra from 1957-1979, Mester made 72 world premiere recordings with the orchestra, a prolific achievement for both conductor and orchestra.
