My lowlight of the week was this — driving on Watterson Trail in stop-and-go traffic, a woman in an SUV slammed into my rear bumper. I was unhurt, but the damage will require a body shop stay for my car and, thus, no ridesharing earnings for a while.
On the brighter side, it was a tremendous week — the first Cocktails with Champions at O’Shea’s Irish Pub was an astounding success, I got to see parts of the new Speed Museum and met Ghislain D’Humieres, and spent a fun hour with ARTxFM’s Marianne Zickuhr and Lauren Argo. HEAR ALL THAT ON THE RUSTY SATELLITE SHOW.
Plus, thanks to Chris Thieneman, I got last-minute tickets to a hilarious roast of Terry Meiners at the downtown Marriott.
The fallout from Donald Trumps visit is still occurring – my take is that Trump’s supporters are as boorish and intolerant as their candidate, thus the scuffles in the crowd and the controversial videotape of a Trump supporter abusing a protester are the lasting impressions of the visit. Here’s what the U of L student in the middle of it all had to say: “The people at the rally, they were pushing and shoving at me, cursing at me, yelling at me, called me every name in the book. They’re disgusting and dangerous.”
Republicans will hold their caucus Saturday, and without doubt the dimmer bulbs among us will select Trump as their candidate. Nationally, at least, the fear of a Trump candidacy has lit a fire under saner members of the party, and a widespread effort to knock Trump down is in play, and might even work.
In Kentucky, Gov. Matt Bevin continued his attack on women this week, filing suit against a Lexington Planned Parenthood clinic.
And the troubles for James Ramsey continued. Under attack from members of the Board of Trustees, Ramsey remained defiant and showed no signs that he’s willing to step down from Scandal University. The Board gathered momentum for a likely no-confidence vote next month.
All of this overshadowed the end of what might have been an historic basketball season at the University of Louisville, where on Tuesday Damion Lee and Trey Lewis helped bash Georgia Tech before receiving rings from Coach Rick Pitino.
