LouisvilleKY’s JCPS Deals with Threat
Nothing like starting the first week of school with a local terrorist scare. My sympathies to those of you who are grappling with the decision on whether to send the kids to school today, but here’s my opinion — don’t let FEAR win. Or the terrorists. As I discuss with Robbie Valentine in this week’s Rusty Satellite Show, I believe people today are too conditioned to be scared because of what they hear in the media, from police and elected officials.
We now live in a community where I can’t send my 17-year-old son to the Mall to go shopping after 4, where a significant portion of parents won’t send their kids to school because of an unspecified threat, and events all over town are cancelled when there’s simply a threat of a snowflake.

A Real Champion at Breakfast: What is a Coast Guard veteran and Harvard graduate doing working for Mayor Greg Fischer? She’s making the local government lean. Yea for Yates: Following the surprising announcement by David Tandy that he won’t seek re-election to Metro Council, David Yates was voted president for 2016. That’s a good thing, IMO.
Another Champion: Listen in to my talk with Robbie Valentine, who was eating at the Cheesecake Factory at the Mall on Dec. 26 when the supposed “riot” took place. Robbie has a perspective that’s likely different than what you’ve heard about the event, and has real concerns to discuss about the plight of young people today. And he told me that all the members of his 1986 championship team are coming back for a reunion at the Yum! this year. And he won’t get me Springsteen tickets.
Rusty Alum Updates: It’s good to seen Sarah Provancher announce that she’s running for the Kentucky House in the 31st District. Actors Theatre’s Jennifer Bielstein is leaving town for a better job, and we’ll miss her. Read an update about Gill Holland’s efforts in Portland at Insider.
Party on the Weekend: The MS Society’s Jam for a Cure, headlined by Greg Forsman and including an appearance by Danny Flanigan, plus a tribute to Tim Krekel, is Friday at Headliners. Louisville’s favorite winter party is Saturday night at Mellwood — Go see the Crashers! at Cabo Wabo, benefitting Uspiritus. Or, you can go to the Brown for WFPK’s 20th Anniversary Bash, featuring Ben Sollee. It looks like Forsman and Flanigan are doing double duty. Closer to my home, Bennie and the Frets, with Mike Spurlock, is playing at Loui Loui’s in Jtown.
Last Night At Actors: I saw the new play, 4000 Miles, in its debut here. Go see it. It’s the story of a bond between a 20-something young man and his grandmother. It really reminded me of my son Nick and his Mamaw. You’ll probably see something in it that will make you think good thoughts, too.
