Louisville’s Waterfront Wednesdays Return

Louisville, Ky., – 91.9 WFPK announces the launch of Louisville’s favorite concert series on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. The WFPK Waterfront Wednesday® Concert Series is a monthly free concert on the Big Four Lawn in Louisville Waterfront Park, located next to the Big Four Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge.
This concert will feature Pokey LaFarge co-headlining with Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn and T. Hardy Morris. It’s sponsored by Goose Island Brewing Company, MINI of Louisville, Republic Bank, Passport Health Plan and Friends of the Waterfront. Additional support comes from Old 502 Winery.
“Incorporating elements of early jazz, ragtime, country blues, Western swing, and beyond, Pokey LaFarge has created a vibrant, deeply expressive body of work that embodies an expansive musical vision and vivid storytelling sensibility that are wholly his own. He’s also earned a reputation as a tireless, uniquely charismatic live performer, winning a loyal international fan base that regularly packs his rousing, celebratory live shows.” — Courtesy, High Road Touring

Béla Fleck is surely the finest banjo player on the planet, a virtuoso who can switch from bluegrass to classical, jazz and African styles, while his wife, Abigail Washburn, is also an impressive banjo performer, influenced by China as well as Appalachia. — Robin Deneslow, The Guardian
T. Hardy Morris “has finally released his solo debut, Audition Tapes, after 16 years of being the frontman for Dead Confederate and member of the supergroup Diamond Rugs. He managed to create a sound all its own, even compared to what he’s usually comfortable with, while making it seem effortless and natural.” — Mitch Keiffer, Popstache
The Big Four Lawn “opens” at 5pm, and the music begins promptly at 6pm. The remaining concert dates for the 2015 season are July 29, August 26 and September 30.
To alleviate parking congestion caused by the KY/IN Bridges project, a free trolley service, courtesy of Republic Bank, will be offered between Witherspoon and the Big Four Lawn for people who park West of I-65. The Republic Bank Easy Trolley will run a continuous loop between 6:00 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Outside alcohol is prohibited. No coolers, glass or pets allowed in the event area of the Big Four Lawn. For more information, please call (502) 814-6519.
The Waterfront Development Corporation (WDC) and WFPK first partnered in 2002 to produce an innovative concert series that showcased local and emerging national recording artists as heard on radio station 91.9 WFPK. Each free concert attracts large audiences to mingle, dance and enjoy the river in a family-friendly park atmosphere with a cash bar and upscale festival fare. The event has become a thriving city institution, drawing thousands to Waterfront Park and helping Louisville secure an international award as a top city for festivals. In addition, the Southeast Tourism Society selected WFPK Waterfront Wednesday® as one of their Top 20 Events.
