The location of Mark’s Feed Store Bar-B-Q & Catering at 1514 Bardstown Road in Deer Park (only colloquially the “Highlands”*) will cease operations following a final business day on August 24.
Another Place Sandwich Shoppe ran here through 1993 and was replaced by the short-lived Nick’s Dixie Pig (“someone needs to understand that meat can be aged to advantage, but this is not a technique applicable to lettuce,” wrote the Courier Journal’s Susan Reigler about Nick’s in June, 1994).
Mark’s Feed Store replaced Nick’s the following year, obviously heeding Reigler’s solid advice in route to a 30-year run.

Our Mark’s location in the Highlands has been a part of that community since 1995. It’s been a wonderful ride full of great memories. On August 24th we will sadly serve our customers in that location for the last time.
We hate to say goodbye but decreasing traffic in the area over the past few years has led us to this tough decision. We hope that each of our loyal Highlands guests will visit us at one of our other locations – Middletown, Dixie, Fern Creek, New Albany, and Elizabethtown or through one of our delivery partners. You may even recognize some of your favorite Highlands employees at one of our other locations.
We appreciate your loyalty and support and plan to continue being a local favorite for many more years to come!

Mark’s Feed Store to close Highlands location after 30 years
Mary Stebbins, Mark’s Feed Store director of operations, said the decision to close the store was a difficult one, but the restaurant’s lease is expiring and foot traffic at that location has declined in recent years.
Adds Jones, “Mark Erwin, founder of Mark’s Feed Store, still owns the property…Erwin founded the brand in Middletown in 1988. After 25 years of growing the business, he sold it to the businessman Ulysses ‘Junior’ Bridgeman. The brand is currently owned by JRM Foods LLC.”
