We return to those traumatic times not so long ago, in 2022, when so many of us suddenly were faced with empty culinary lives without Schnitzel Holsteiner Art (and Aventinus Weizen Doppelbock).
Auf Wiedersehen, Gasthaus
As an aside, in case you’re wondering which three departed local eating and drinking establishments I miss the most, here they are.
- Bluegrass Brewing Company Shelbyville Road
- Gasthaus
- Maido Essential Japanese
Speaking personally, I’ve visited Germany something like 23 times since 1985, and eaten a fair number of meals within the country’s present-day boundaries.
During the late 1990s, I began telling anyone who would listen that our beloved Gasthaus was as good as most eateries I’d experienced in the Old Country, and often better.
I stick by this assessment. Now we can repair to our home kitchens and seek to replicate the Gasthaus’s stellar menu, thanks to Nina Greipel’s Gasthaus Coookbook and Memories.
The information release follows; know that the first book signing is right where you’d imagine.
Book signing: 2 p.m. Oct. 5 at the German American Club, 1840 Lincoln Avenue, Louisville, Ky 40213
Here’s the release.

The Greipel family, led by parents Annemarie and Michael, immigrated from Bochum, Germany and opened the Gasthaus in 1993. Their German entrees, appetizers and desserts took Louisville by storm, and The Gasthaus became the regional go-to destination for high-quality German food. The restaurant thrived for 29 years until the Greipels retired in 2022.
Daughter Nina Greipel, a professional freelance photojournalist and “self-taught kitchen enthusiast,” worked with her parents to create the cookbook by following their recipes and translating them into easy-to-follow, single-meal measures and directions.
Nina also included photos and stories to add a little fun to the book. She gives a little history, an origin story or cooking tips at the top of each recipe.
The recipe amounts are listed in metric weight and imperial measures (cups, teaspoons, etc.), to accommodate any cook or kitchen. The recipes are Gasthaus originals, as well as those handed down through the Greipel family. It even includes the coveted Strawberry Napoleons dessert, invented by Annemarie Greipel.
Along with her parents’ guidance and shared family stories, Nina Greipel recreated the recipes in her own kitchen, testing, photographing and designing the book’s contents.
