In its original and specific usage, “groundswell” means deep ocean ripples or waves, as initiated by distant storms or seismic events.
However, “groundswell” has come to describe certain upsurges in human affairs: a seemingly sudden and rapid expression of collective opinion, usually in support of someone or something.
Akin to Beatlemania — or Norma Jean’s, an evolving dessert shop and bakery in New Albany. The business’s latest chapter began unfolding in August at the building New Albanians know as Mom & Pop’s Cone Corner (1817 Graybrook Lane).
The text:
When my mom first showed me this building back in February there was still snow on the ground. She said, “This would be so cute for Norma Jean’s.” At the time it wasn’t even something I could think about because my business wasn’t at the point where a building like that made sense yet. (It also wasn’t on the market, so I didn’t even know who I would contact if I wanted to ask about it.)
A few weeks ago I told my friend that I needed to find a new place and she happened to drive by that same building and sent me an old listing she found online. I was so excited until I read that it had already been leased. The realtor I was working with confirmed the same thing so I let it go.
That same night something happened that I still can’t explain any other way. The owner’s cousin emailed me and said, “I think I know the perfect place for you.” It was the exact same building. The one I had already accepted wasn’t meant for me. (Except it WAS!)
Sometimes God asks us to stop trying to force doors open and to just trust Him. The minute I stopped trying to make my own plans work and started praying, ‘Your will, not mine’ everything changed. I couldn’t have orchestrated this if I tried.
So with a grateful heart, I’m so excited to finally share that Norma Jean’s will soon have a new home at 1817 Graybrook Lane.
