“The Old Fashioned cocktail” has a great history right here in Louisville KY!
The bourbon boom in Kentucky is making what was once considered to be “old fashioned”… trendy again.
Classically, the old fashioned cocktail is a drink consisting of sugar, water, bitters and our favorite spirit: bourbon, the same basic ingredients that make up the original definition of a cocktail – which dates back to the 1700’s.
Through the years, mixologists transformed spirits with all kinds of crazy concoctions, leaving some to long for a simple drink – made “the old fashioned way”.
In the late 1800’s a bartender here at the Pendennis Club on Muhammad Ali Boulevard decided to serve “just that”, mixing a premium bourbon with simple syrup, angostura bitters, along with an orange slice, a cherry, and a lemon twist.
He called it an “old fashioned cocktail” and the name stuck.
More than a hundred years later – its still a favorite all around the world.
And its history at Louisville’s Pendennis Club is now “uncovered”!
