Pandora Productions will debut the critically acclaimed musical drama ‘A Man of no Importance’ at the Victor Jory Theatre at Actors Theatre, September 8 – 18, kicking off it’s 2011-2012 season in award-winning fashion. Set in 1964 Dublin, the piece has been described as, “a tender and beautifully woven tale of love, friendship and coming to terms with one’s identity.”
Every year Pandora Productions aims to engage and inspire its audiences with productions set amidst “our diverse human community”, first opening at the Alley Theater in 1995 with a sold-out production of ‘Falsettos’. The company has since expanded it’s offerings each year and it’s 2011-12 season will feature seven productions spread across the remainder of the year and continuing into summer 2012, and playing at a wide range of venues including Actors Theater, The Bard’s Town Theater and The Connection Theatre.
As adapted from the book by Terrence McNally, with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, ‘A Man of No Importance’ was the winner of the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. Alfie Byrne is a lonely middle-aged man living with a spinster sister and gaining solace only from his role as the director of an amateur theater troupe housed in a local church. After years of putting on the same non-challenging productions Alfie decides to produce a much more provocative piece by his hero Oscar Wilde, but when the church protests the play’s “immodest dancing” everything begins to unravel.
