What a week, both personally and professionally.
Here’s a link to this week’s podcast of The Rusty Satellite Show.
Let’s just say that I had some of time freed up by a lifestyle change and leave it at that. And, we hosted a record crowd for the Breakfast of Champions, I got to speak to the Mayor, had a blog post at Insider Louisville that is creating some attention, and spent much of the week at the Galt House doing trade shows and staying disconnected from the Internet.
Still, the best part was the two interviews for Rusty Satellite. My fourth podcast features Steve Fehder, who decided 30 months ago to create an entirely new media operation from scratch. Today, Catholic Sports Network has plush office space near the Summit, a growing list of clients (including a certain 16-year-old racecar driver named Ben Rhodes), and just signed on as the network producer for Trinity High School football on the radio. And one of my idols and mentors, Billy Reed, works there.
I was scrambling for a second guest Tuesday when I thought of Bernie Lubbers, who not only has the coolest job on the planet as a bourbon ambassador, but has his own separate persona as the Whiskey Professor. A few months back I saw this Bluegrass and Bourbon show at the Haymarket Whiskey Bar and loved it. I caught Bernie, who spent 20 years traveling the country doing stand-up comedy, just before he headed to New Orleans for an event.
On the podcast, you may be interested in my take on television as entertainment today, as I’m celebrating a new season of HBO’s The Newsroom. It gave me a chance to consider the best that TV has to offer these days, and realize that everything that’s any good is on cable. Nobody I know even watches major network dramas, comedies and ugh, reality shows, but plenty of people I talk with are paying attention to shows like Dexter. My favorite is the F/X show Justified. Others on my list are AMC’s Mad Men, Showtime’s Weeds, Californication, House of Lies and Shameless. And I can’t wait for the eventual return of the best comedy of the age — Curb Your Enthusiasm. Even Netflix is producing high quality shows. I’ve heard tremendous reviews, but haven’t yet seen, House of Cards. That one got a bunch of Emmy nominations this week, a first for an online-only series.
Even news is more entertaining and informative, for the most part, on cable. My sons, like most kids you know in high school or college, will sit down for an episode of The Daily Show or The Colbert Report, but would kick and scream before watching Scott Pelley or Brian Williams (unless he’s a guest on The Daily Show). I never make it through an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher without literally laughing out loud. If you haven’t watched Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, you’re missing the best journalism in sports available today.
Also in this podcast, I talk about Mayor Greg Fischer’s VisionLouisville project, which offers up hundreds of ideas on how to improve things around here.
