SB 47 Moooves on to the House
On last Friday morning, February 10th, the Kentucky Senate took a time out from redistricting skirmishes and voted 22-15 to pass SB 47 on to the House. The bill validates a farmer's right to engage in cow-sharing, thus smoothing the way for access to raw milk by cow-sharing consumers.
The votes were mainly organized across party lines, 18 Republicans voting for and 3 against; while only 3 Democrats voted for the bill, and 13 voted against.
The bill moves on to the House, where it faces serious opposition from the Democratic-controlled chamber. To pass, it will need some hearty "raw, raw, raw's" from legislators on both sides of the aisle. Hopefully for Kentucky's small-operation dairy farmers and rural consumers, the bill hasn't yet been milked for all it's worth.
