Sky Premium Lounge is coming to the former HopCat in Cherokee Triangle

That’s HopCat, not SDF.

My dictionary defines the noun luxury as “the state of great comfort and extravagant living.” When used as an adjective, it means “luxurious, or of the nature of a luxury.” Premium slots in this approximate territory, too.

As an adjective, premium implies something of superior quality that probably costs more too. Premium comes straight out of Latin, meaning “reward.” It was first used as an adjective around 1925, in the phrase “premium butter.”

Concurrently, veteran readers might recall Spindletop Draperies, located in a building at 1064 and/or 1066 Bardstown Rd. in Cherokee Triangle (perhaps reflecting the merging of two lots in the distant past). The draperies business moved in 2014, and remodeling began toward housing an upwardly mobile food and drink establishment.

Here is what happened next.

2016: HopCat now pouring in the Highlands (closed during the pandemic)

2021: The Wiggle Room wriggles and writhes into space where HopCat used to reside (closed after a year in business)

2023: Bakersfield debuts tomorrow in the Highlands (Tue., 12 Sept.) (closed after a year in business)

But the past isn’t always prologue.

Lasting success in food and drink (in any business, really) depends on numerous interrelated factors: product quality, square footage, labor costs, economy of scale, operating capital and so on. It’s finding the right fit for a specific location when the goalposts never stop moving.

As such, there’s a new bar opening in a familiar space.

New luxury-style bar to open this weekend on Bardstown Road in former HopCat spot, by Amanda Hancock (Louisville Courier Journal)

About three years after the short-lived Wiggle Room closed its second-floor bar on Bardstown Road, the prominent Highlands location will soon no longer be vacant. Sky Premium Lounge, a new luxury bar where you can “elevate your night with stunning views and great deals,” according to its website, is expected to open on the second floor at 1066 Bardstown Road. A grand opening is set for Saturday, June 14, according to Sky’s Instagram page.

Note that Sky’s “grand opening” Instagram post was removed, so it isn’t clear when this actually will occur. In fact, there’s not much information available of any sort apart from Hancock’s scoop, except for hourly event venue rates.

For me, the name Sky conjures visions of those spiffy, special Delta or United areas (note that I proudly fly steerage), and the website’s “splash” color scheme is vaguely reminiscent of a premium vodka advertisement in the sort of glossy...Read more
