After just two days of business, Louisville, Kentucky’s new SmashBurger Restaurant can be declared I hit. The restaurant opened its doors at the corner of Hurstbourne Parkway and Shelbyville Road this past Wednesday. As of today lines were out the door (before lunchtime) waiting to get a taste of this new Louisville smash!
We waited in line about 20 min (that’s about my maximum for this type of thing), ordered our food, found a table and were served within 10 minutes. I have to tell you, the food was delicious! My wife Norine and I both ordered chicken versions of the Smashburger (it’s my small attempt at trying to lose weight), along with an order of smash fries (okay, give me a break, it looked too good to pass up)! The fries are tossed with Rosemary, Olive Oil and Garlic, very tasty.
I ordered the Spicy Baja chicken sandwich, which comes with Pepper jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, spicy chipotle mayo and fresh jalapeños on a spicy chipotle bun. I have to tell you, those jalapenos gave the sandwich a real wow factor! The burgers and chicken sandwiches run between six and seven dollars each, not the cheapest in town, but well worth trying.
I talked to one of the owners, who tells me the restaurant could have been a bit bigger but the furniture store next-door, took some of the space when the prior tenant, a Chinese restaurant moved out. The owners hope this crowd will continue after three weeks, I suspect it will!
I see only two problems for the restaurant, the first one is access from Shelbyville Road. There’s a lot of traffic and customers are going to have to get used to navigating the small driveway in front of the restaurant. The other problem involves the parking, there are a lot of spaces but there are also a number of stores already in the shopping center. I have to believe that if the crowds continue, the other stores may start complaining that their customers don’t have a place to park.
Without question, SmashBurger will give Five Guys a run for the gourmet burger sandwich clientele. But in a city like Louisville, there’s plenty of room for everyone.
