Were you ever a young whippersnapper alive with idealism and energy? The good news is that student and youth activism are alive and well at the University of Louisville and Indiana University Southeast through Student United Way.
Student United Way are student-run organizations that inspire college students to give, advocate and volunteer. They challenge students and ask questions like: Do you feel strongly about providing educational opportunities to children in low-income areas? Do you want to make students aware of the benefits of certain health practices? Student United Way provides students an opportunity to be leaders on their campuses and leaders in their community. They also want to connect service-minded students to each other.
Last year, the Student United Way chapter at Indiana University Southeast held an event called Barricade of Boxes. Students set boxes up in the courtyard of their campus and slept outside to experience a night as a homeless person, raise awareness and abolish myths about homelessness. Activities included speakers on the topic of homelessness, music, a box decorating contest, and a viewing of The Pursuit of Happyness, a film based on the true story of Chris Gardner. Student United Way at the University of Louisville sponsored a blanket drive to benefit Blanket Louisville, a local nonprofit organization that collects and delivers blankets to the area’s homeless. There were bins placed around campus and students donated new or gently used blankets and help keep those who need us most warm this winter.
