Surprise: Flash Mob is Coming Real Soon

The thing about Flash Mobs is that you really don’t know when or where they’re going to happen. But I can tell you that one will happen in Louisville today. I just can’t tell you when or where, because if I did, someone would kill me.

Shhh! Flash Mob Practice

Just kidding. Sort of.  Emily Carroll, a media buyer at Leapfrog Interactive, says she came up with the idea of organizing a flash mob after watching an episode of the TV show Modern Family. Emily is just 25, but said it was “bucket list” thing for her to organize and execute one.

Officially a Flash Mob is “a term coined in 2003 to denote a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual or seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire.” Here’s video from one in Seattle on YouTube.

Carroll created a Facebook group, Flash Mobsters of Louisville, and thought it was cool that 45 people signed up. But that was just the beginning. It grew by the hundreds, reaching 700. Big crowds showed up when she called practices – the first was in February. She worked with choreographers to select music (Villebillies, Katy Perry) and steps. And then, the part I can’t tell you, she arranged a special time and location for the three-minute event. Carroll says 175 people will be involved. And it’s gonna happen very soon.

Somewhere in town.
