By now, you’ve probably heard the news.

The text reads:

Dear Friends,

We want to sincerely thank you for your support, friendship, and countless good memories shared with us. We’ll be closed this week and will reopen one last time on Saturday, November 15th, for our final day of service.

It’s been an honor to serve this community, and we hope you’ll join us one more time as we raise a glass to the good times we’ve shared.

With gratitude,

The Silver Dollar

The Silver Dollar opened in 2011 in a restored firehouse at 1762 Frankfort Avenue in Clifton. In its heyday, the establishment’s reach was nationwide, and lamentations are landing on the interwebz from across the nation.

The Silver Dollar, One of Louisville’s Great Whisky Bars, Is Closing Its Doors, by David Fleming (Whisky Advocate)

By 2013, The Silver Dollar had become a major destination in Louisville, and rode the Kentucky bourbon renaissance and the whisky boom nationwide. It was praised in the national media as one of America’s best whisky bars, and boasted what can only be described as an amazing whiskey list, with over 300 bourbons on six pages, and selections that also included many single barrels. The food was also widely praised.

Competition increased, the pandemic stung, ownership changed, and while The Silver Dollar seems to have been around a lot longer than 14 years, it was a good run either way. Businesses have life spans, just like the people who built them. As with any funeral, knowing this doesn’t make it any easier.

One thing’s for sure: if a food and drink purveyor elects to take over in the Albert A. Stoll, it’s going to be very weird, and for a good long while.
