The WEEK: Choices, Choices, Choices

Chili, Continued. Wouldn’t a big bowl of chili be great right now? Even better, you can still participate in the Great Chili Cook-off next weekend. They need a few more chili cookers for the Oct. 10 event at the Belvedere. Hear about it on this recent Rusty Show.

You Don’t Love Me Anymore? The LEO Weekly Readers Choice awards were released this week, and there were zero repeat honors for me and LouisvilleKY.com. But some Rusty Satellite vets cleaned up, my favorite being “Best Entrepreneur” Emily McCay. Also, Tom Mabe got 2nd best local comedian, And Terry Meiners, Rachel Platt and Eric Crawford received media awards.

Look Who’s Back on TV: Claudia Coffey, who left her news anchor job in March 2014, is back on the air at WHAS-TV. Her Facebook post says she’s just filling in for Kelsey Starks. Here’s what I wrote about it then. Coffey since accepted a position as executive director of the Louisville Apartment Association.

Ken Jennings Doesn’t Know What’s in an Old-Fashioned: But he knows a lot of other important stuff, as he explained at the Idea Festival.

rs117MaryEllenWMary Ellen, Here’s a New Task for you: Mayor Fischer, in a news release sent yesterday, wants the city’s economic development group, Louisville Forward, to pursue more and better soccer for the city. Wonder why Mary Ellen Wiederwohl didn’t mention that on her Rusty Satellite interview this week? At least she had the right colors going in this photo.

Need a Job?: Snelling Staffing’s Job of the Week is for multiple direct hire full-time positions, especially engineers.

Magre’s Social Media Strike: In response to an Insider Louisville story in which the PR firm hired by the out-of-state owners defended the motel’s record, claiming it has been unfairly targeted, Councilman Steve Magre sent out an official release directing readers to complaints on the motel’s Facebook page. His quote: “For an organization that has spent this whole year trying to convince media and public that the long awaited clean up at their hotel has wings now, I must ask why would the owners and managers allow the Facebook page forwarded here to remain up? I hope you ask them.”

Col. Sanders wants YOU to help end hunger.
Col. Sanders wants YOU to help end hunger.

That’s 9 tons of food: The goal of Yum! Brands End Hunger Drive-Thru is to collect 1,000 pounds of food for each of the 18 years since its founding. I spoke about that, among other things, with Laura Melillo Barnum this week at the big White House. There’s a life-size Col. Sanders in the lobby there, and he’s a little bit creepy.

Joe’s Isn’t Getting Any Older: We’re gonna miss Joe’s Older Than Dirt in Lyndon, where most of us have had some sort of experience involving drinking. But as Insider Louisville’s Steve Coomes reported, the real estate will be home to something new and exciting – the Red Barn Kitchen.

Things to do in Louisville even if it rains:

  1. IF FILM – featuring Kiley Parker’s “Baby Shower” and a dozen other films.
  2. Louder Than Life – If you live in Clifton, you’ll be listening from your home anyway.
  3. St. James Court Art Show — The kids are out of school anyway.
  4. Watch the Cards in a Monsoon — Kickoff is at 12:30 in Raleigh, provided Joaquin doesn’t take over.
  5. Go Trolley Hopping: It’s the First Friday of the Month.
  6. Blues at Big Rock: If you have anything left in the tank, great music at Big Rock on Sunday.
