Louisville, Ky., – Two members of the Louisville Metro Council are sponsoring a resolution which calls on Kentucky lawmakers to pass an increase in the minimum wage during the 2016 legislative session.
Councilman David James (D-6) and Councilman Brent Ackerson (D-26) are co-sponsors of the resolution.
“We are seeing positive benefits to the action the Council took last December and it is time that all low-income and hard working men and women benefit by increasing the minimum wage,” says James. “The indications are all positive on the impact of the increase. Our unemployment rate continues to decline and families are seeing a closing of the income inequality gap.”
Metro Louisville’s minimum wage law took effect on January 2nd of this year. On July 1st, the wage went from $7.25 to $7.75. On July 1st of 2016, the rate moves up to $8.25 and then finally to $9.00 on July 1st 2017. Future increases are tied to the Consumer Price Index beginning July 1st in 2018.
“The city’s approach to increasing the minimum wage is realistic and allows businesses to make the increase gradually,” says Ackerson. “It is time Frankfort gave a helping hand to those who are struggling statewide.”
The Resolution has been assigned to the Metro Council’s Labor and Economic Development Committee which will meet at 4:00pm on today, November 10th.
