Wedding Dress Hunting and My Green Conscious.

For years it’s been the norm that grooms rent their tuxedos, despite the fact that you can buy a brand new gorgeous tux for less than the price of rental. Buying a tux makes sense because it’s highly likely that you’ll have another opportunity to wear one, at least if you’re marrying a musician who loves to attend galas. So why is it that Rent-a-Bridal-Gown is still hasn’t really caught on? It’s certainly more expensive to buy a dress than to rent one, and you will never have a reason to wear a wedding dress again. Somehow grooms still rent tuxes, and brides still buy gowns.

David and I are trying to be different, as you’ve read over our many blogs. He actually bought a tuxedo last week, and it was indeed less money to buy than to rent. I, as you know, have been fixated on borrowing a friend’s wedding dress, or buying something pre-owned.

Let me get something straight. I’m not judging anyone who buys a new bridal gown. I’ve tried on plenty, and they are completely gorgeous. It’s totally understandable to want to wear something that makes you feel perfect on the one day in your life when you know everyone will be looking at you. But for the same reasons that I don’t eat meat and I do compost, I don’t want to buy something brand new. I don’t care if you eat meat, and I don’t care if you have a brand new gorgeous gown. It’s just not my thing.

Except that now, um, … I’m starting to want a new gown. I haven’t had a craving for a steak in the sixteen years I’ve been a vegetarian, so why is it that I’m craving a pretty new dress? I can’t help wonder if I’m being subliminally twisted by the wedding industry.

I’ve got three lovely dresses that have been donated to my “borrow-a-dress” cause, but I’m starting to think that maybe I do want my own dress. I feel horrible about it, like I do when I’m too disgusted/lazy to clean out the mystery tupperware in the back of the refrigerator, and rather than cleaning it, composting it, and recycling it, I throw it away and pretend it never happened.

Besides, some of these places are having ridiculous sales this week… by the way, if I start to ‘fess up to buying something at retail price, you’ll know I’ve lost my mind. Keep an eye out for me, will ya?
