We’re Winning in Louisville This Weekend

What to do, what to do. Here’s a partial list of Memorial Day weekend activities — Kentucky Reggae Festival, Abbey Road on the River, the Bats are home, the PGA Senior Championship at Valhalla, night racing at Churchill Downs, and on Monday it’s the first of Mayor Greg Fischer’s Hike, Bike and Paddle Events.  On Sunday night the Willow Park concert series kicks in. And according to the weather guessers, we may actually have some summer weather to enjoy it all in.

And. . .

The things you see at Walmart. Watch the video at the end of this post

Kiyoshi?: A Japanese golfer, Kiyoshi Murota, is the first-round leader at the PGA Seniors at Valhalla. But Kenny Perry is only 3 shots back as he finishes up his first round this morning. Because of the rain on Thursday, your tickets from yesterday are good today to get in at Valhalla. Check the leaderboard.

Sunday Library Time Returns: The Mayor opened his budget address with a parable about a family budget, and then gave everyone good news — Sunday library hours are coming back.  But if you make $70K or more, you’re getting a free unpaid vacation week, and if you’re getting government money to run your non-essential program, the gig’s about up.  You can listen to the whole thing here.

Thumbs Up From the Council Dems: After the Mayor’s address, Democrats on the council were universally positive in their reactions. 14 of 17 majority caucus members put out statements supporting the plan. Notably absent from the list – Judy Green.

Jim King’s Reaction: “I appreciate the new spirit of cooperation the administration has shown in this process by including the Council in discussions about what can be achieved with the limited resources we have available. The city still has a “structural problem” with its budget, meaning fixed costs such as salaries, pensions and health insurance continue to rise faster than revenue. We are solving the problem for one year, it keeps government operations going but we must take a good hard look at the future. We share that concern with the Mayor. In the coming month, the members of the Budget Committee will begin their review and will work hard to ensure the most effective use of tax dollars to provide services and investment.”

In Divorce News: Richie Farmer’s divorce hearing was surprisingly canceled by both parties, with no explanation, yesterday.  Maybe the Farmers have figured out that going through with a public case will not be good for the candidate’s chances in the fall election.

Darts and Charity: The other night Angie Fenton wrangled an extra $5K from the management at Drake’s.  They did a funny promo about her battle with Terry Meiners. Also starring Kevin Harned, Scott Reynolds.  Terry was actually worse at darts than golf.  The Video:

Watch for Typos: My friend Ron Cooper,  the Word Doctor, has declared June naitonal typo month.  I’ll keep giving him ammuntion.

No One’s Stalking Your Cell Phone: I’m just not buying this piece on Fox41 that features a woman, whose identity is concealed, claiming she’s being somehow stalked on her cell phone even though she’s changed her phone AND her number.  Just scaring people for no reason.

End of May TV Sweeps: WLKY-TV wins. Big. Story at 11.

Humor Break: I can’t get these images of Wal-mart shoppers, or the catchy tune,  out of my head.
