Louisville Cyclists to Honor Local Bike Advocate and Author Joe Ward

Joe Ward cycling advocate
Joe Ward

Joe Ward, a legend in Louisville and Bluegrass cycling circles, is in the middle of a bone marrow transplant procedure in Lexington.

As a show of love and support, local cyclists will ride to Lexington and  Rally outside the Markey Cancer Center on Saturday, May 28. Here’s how you can be involved:

Ride to Lexington on Saturday, May 28 – Assemble at Heine Brothers’ Coffee on Frankfort Ave. in Crescent Hill 6:30 – 7:15 am. Depart by bike for Lexington promptly at 7:30 am, rain or shine. Here’s the route: http://tinyurl.com/3mxuxhu . (Please note that the start is Heine Bros. on Frankfort, NOT GRCP!)

Can’t make the whole ride? NO PROBLEM – Join the group anywhere along the route. Frankfort and Midway are great options. Or drive to Lexington and join in the celebration of this tireless advocate, author and cycling ambassador!

Celebrate and Support Joe Ward – Assemble at about 5 pm outside Markey Cancer Center BMTP, 800 Rose St., Lexington, KY 40536.

Candlelight Celebration at 9:15 pm – Let’s get a real flash mob of cyclists together to dazzle Bluegrass Joe. (We can’t get near his room because he has no immune system right now. He’s in isolation like the bubble boy for the next couple of weeks.)

Bike Club members: Now is the time to reach out to every rider you know. Tell them about this Rally for Joe Ward. If you can’t bike there, drive and join in the show of support on Saturday evening outside the Markey Cancer Center, 800 Rose St., Lexington, KY 40536.
Send your cards and letters to Rm. 304.

Horsey Hundred Riders: Don’t count yourselves out. Drop by after the Horsey and Horse around outside the cancer center. Nothing will cheer Joe up more than a whole bunch of sweaty cyclists dancing on the lawn! Spread the word on the ride, OK! Make some noise!

CHEAP ROOMS AVAILABLE AT UK! – Thanks to Geoffrey Hobin’s connections at the University, riders from Louisville can stay in Lex for just $21 plus $5 for linens. Must let us know by end of day Thursday!

Sunday Plan: Get up early. Eat a big breakfast. Ride back home!

Volunteer to bring riders back to Louisville – If you’re driving, bring a bike rack and offer a ride home for Saturday riders.
