Louisville KY’s Sustainability Summit kicks off Friday

LOUISVILLE, KY – As part of their continuing mission to improve sustainability efforts in the community, the Louisville Metro Office of Sustainability and the Louisville Sustainability Council (LSC) are co-hosting the second annual Sustainability Summit on Friday, November 6 with an evening reception on November 5.

“The Sustainability Summit is a great effort by the Office of Sustainability and Louisville Sustainability Council to make our city healthier and more livable.” said Mayor Greg Fischer. “The shared ideas at this event are vital to promote awareness of our air quality issues will help empower citizens to do their part to improve it.”

The 2015 Sustainability Summit welcomes Louisville’s sustainability and health professionals as well as interested citizens of all backgrounds to attend the event. Through the Summit, community efforts to improve air quality will be celebrated and elevated. In addition to connecting and convening new and existing passionate, air-quality focused individuals and organizations, the Sustainability Summit will energize the community to get involved, to develop actionable steps, and to make positive changes.

Mayor Greg Fischer will be speaking at the evening reception and Louisville Forward Chief Mary Ellen Wiederwohl will speak at the summit. Other speakers featured at this year’s event include Dr. Ted Smith, Arnita Gadson, Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar, and other air quality, environmental, and health experts.

“The 2015 Summit will expand on the success of the first Summit, and the focus on air quality will help drive activities and efforts to help achieve the city’s health and environmental sustainability goals,” said Maria Koetter, Director of the Office of Sustainability.

Sessions for the 2015 Sustainability Summit: Improving Our Air Quality will take place Friday, November 6, from 8:00 am – 5:30 pm at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, 1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd. Participants will attend plenary sessions in the morning and breakout sessions in the afternoon. The afternoon breakout sessions for participant discussion, facilitated by the Center for Nonprofit Excellence, will follow five tracks related to improving Louisville’s air quality: Buildings; Land Use & Transportation; Alternative Energy; Natural Systems; and Community Engagement.

This year’s Sustainability Summit is proud to receive support from its event sponsors Humana, Yum! Brands, and the Institute for Healthy Air, Water, & Soil, all of whom are committed to sustainability.

An opening reception including welcome presentations, hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and special entertainment will be held on Thursday, November 5 at Copper & Kings, 1121 East Washington Street, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm.

Registration for the 2015 Sustainability Summit includes entrance to the Thursday evening and Friday events, as well as a one-year membership with the LSC. The event will allow for onsite registration. Registration is still open and costs $50 for Louisville Sustainability Council members, $75 for the general public and $25 for students.
