UofL and UK send Five to NFL Combine

Who says football season is over?

The NFL has invited running back Bilal Powell, cornerback Johnny Patrick, and tight end Cameron Graham to the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis.  The league has also invited wideout Randall Cobb and running back Derrick Locke of UK.  The Combine serves as the best chance for coaches to see the future pros workout. It includes physical events like weightlifting, dashes, and other tests to measure the physical characteristics of the prospect.

Cards Have a Close Call

A win is a win is a win is a win. With that being said, a slim four-point victory is scary against bottom-feeder DePaul. Peyton Siva did put up 10 assists and Kyle Kuric had 19 crucial points with senior leader Preston Knowles absent. Rick Pitino will have Knowles available against 8th- ranked Notre Dame. I have heard that its a strong possibility that the two injured big men, Rakeem Buckles and Gorgui Dieng, will travel with the team in South Bend. Dieng has a better chance to return than Buckles, but I’m told but both are still game-day decisions. The Cards could us both in what promises to be a battle with the Irish.

UofL 1986 Championship Squad to Be Honored Saturday

U of L will honor the ’86 NCAA champs at the Yum Center Saturday. Denny Crum’s Cards beat Duke in the championship and “Never Nervous” Pervis Ellison was named the MVP, the first freshman to win it. I really enjoy when old Cards come back during huge home games. A well timed speech from one of the legends always pumps the crowd up and the players and it will be needed against  Syracuse.

Seneca QB DaMarcus Smith Picks UCF

On Friday, Smith told Cards fans what they had already expected. I want to first say that I wish Smith the best, but if you are calling your move a business decision I don’t think its a great one. Smith said that his switch wasn’t due to five star recruit Teddy Bridgewater posing a serious challenge for the starting job. If that wasn’t it, then what was it? Charlie Strong continued to be extremely welcoming to Smith after the Bridgewater commitment. It was only until that commitment came that Smith began to waver. With or without Smith, Charlie Strong still has the best recruiting class Louisville has ever seen.

Super Bowl Reactions

First of all, did anyone notice who was crying during Christina Aguliera’s much blogged about national anthem? That’s right it was our own William Gay. The former Cardinal let the magnitude of the moment get the best for him. He couldn’t get himself together in time to get burned for a touchdown on the Packers’ opening drive. He made a couple great plays later on, but nothing spectacular.

He is shedding tears for Christina's botched anthem.

Despite all the media faux-pas that have been so much talked about,  last night’s game was enjoyable. Unfortunately I picked the wrong team, but  if the Steelers had scored they would have won 35-32 and I predicted them winning 35-28.  I was disappointed in the lack of a defensive effort from the Steelers, as Aaron Rodgers did a tremendous job picking Pittsburgh apart and his MVP award was well deserved.

On the commercial front, I didn’t get much enjoyment from the ads that were meant to make us laugh. The ad that garnered the most was the Darth Vader Volkswagen spot that I mentioned before the game. Yet, the ad that was most talked about most around work had to be the Eminem Chrysler ad. It was an excellent commentary on the current state of the American automotive industry. The spots that were more serious in nature along with the highly anticipated movie trailers that were shown were much more enjoyable than the absent-minded beer and Doritos commercials.
